Past, present, future is the spread everybody knows, and the one most often read wrongly. The error is in the third position: people treat it as a forecast rather than as a direction of travel.

Read as momentum it becomes genuinely useful. The third card is not "what will happen". It is "where this points if the current pattern continues" — which is a conditional statement, and conditional statements can be acted on.

1. Define the timeframe before you draw. "Past" in a three-month situationship means something different from "past" in a fifteen-year marriage.
2. Read the present card first and check it against what you already know. It calibrates the other two.
3. Say the third card as a sentence beginning "if nothing changes…". If you cannot say it that way honestly, you are reading it as prophecy.
4. Finish by naming one thing that would change the condition. That is the actual output of this spread.

A worked example

Question: Where is my job situation heading?

Four of Wands in the past, Ten of Wands in the present, Eight of Cups as the direction. Read as momentum: you built something stable, you are now carrying considerably more than the role was, and if nothing changes the direction points toward leaving quietly rather than renegotiating. The useful part is the condition — the reading is telling you that renegotiating is the untried option.

Can the future card in a tarot spread be wrong?

It is not the kind of thing that can be right or wrong, because it is not a prediction. It describes where a pattern points. Change the pattern and the direction changes with it, which is the entire point of reading it.

How far into the future does the third card reach?

There is no fixed answer, and any site that gives you one is inventing it. Set the horizon yourself before you draw — the next month, the next quarter — so the card has a frame to be read against.
