Celtic Cross Tarot Spread — All 10 Positions Explained

The Celtic Cross is the most famous spread in tarot and the one most likely to be used when something smaller would work better. Ten cards is a lot of surface area, and surface area invites you to find meaning that is not there.

Used on the right question it is excellent, because it separates things a three-card spread has to collapse: what is crossing you, what is beneath the situation, how you see it, how others see it. Those are genuinely different questions.

How to lay it out

1. Only use this when the question genuinely has this many moving parts. Most do not.
2. Lay positions 1 and 2 as a cross, 3 to 6 around them, and 7 to 10 in a column to the right.
3. Read in pairs before reading in sequence: 1 with 2, 3 with 5, 7 with 8, 9 with 10.
4. If you cannot summarise the whole thing in three sentences at the end, the spread was too big for the question.

Is the Celtic Cross good for beginners?

It is a difficult first spread. Ten cards give a beginner too many places to go, and the usual result is a reading that says a bit of everything. Three cards read well will teach you more.

Does the tenth card predict the outcome?

It describes where the situation points if the current pattern continues. Treating it as a fixed outcome removes the only useful thing about it, which is that the pattern is the part you can change.
